An Instagram AI chatbot that can answer product questions

Instagram DMs are where interest turns into a sale or evaporates. Someone sees a post, asks whether it comes in black, and waits. If the answer takes until tomorrow the moment is gone. Paperchat connects to your Instagram business account and answers those messages in seconds, using your trained content and a live search of your store, so it can name the product, the price and whether the size is actually available. It captures the lead when a shopper is not ready to buy, hands anything awkward to your team, and puts every DM in the same inbox as your website and Messenger conversations.

An Instagram DM

Saw the linen dress on your story, does it come in black?

Performed actionShopify

It does, in black and clay, at $118. Black is in stock in sizes 8 to 14.

Is it true to size?

It runs slightly loose, so most people take their usual size or one down for a fitted look.

The reply speed is the whole point

Instagram shopping is impulsive. A DM sent while someone is scrolling has a short shelf life, and the business that answers within a couple of minutes captures a sale the business that answers tomorrow does not. Most small teams cannot watch the inbox continuously, which is why so many product DMs go stale.

An agent that answers immediately, correctly, at eleven at night, changes the economics of the channel. The conversations that need a person still reach you, but they arrive already advanced rather than sitting at the first question.

What usually happens without automation
  1. 1A DM arrives during the evening
  2. 2Nobody sees it until the next working day
  3. 3The shopper has already bought elsewhere
  4. 4The conversation is marked read and forgotten

It answers from your catalogue, not from vibes

Instagram questions are almost always about a specific product: colour, size, price, stock, delivery. Those answers have to be current, which means the agent needs to search your store rather than recite a description it memorised weeks ago.

With Shopify or WooCommerce connected, the agent looks the product up while replying, so it can confirm the variant and whether it can actually ship. Store connections are free on every plan.

Capture the shopper who is not ready yet

Plenty of Instagram conversations end with genuine interest and no purchase, because the item is out of stock or payday is next week. On paid plans the agent can ask for an email at that point, and the lead arrives with the whole conversation so you know exactly what they wanted.

That turns a dead DM into a list you can actually use, restock alerts, a follow up when the size returns, or a discount for the people who were closest to buying.

Out of stock, lead captured

Do you have the boots in a 39?

Performed actionShopify

39 is sold out at the moment, though 38 and 40 are available.

If you leave an email I will make sure you hear when 39 is back.

One inbox with your website and Messenger

Instagram is rarely the only place customers message. The same person may DM you, then use the website widget a week later. Keeping those in separate tools means nobody has the full picture.

Paperchat runs one trained agent across Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and your website, with a single inbox behind them. Handover moves a conversation to your team without the customer leaving Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Using an AI chatbot on Instagram DMs

For a lot of small brands Instagram is the shop window and the DM inbox is the counter. The problem is that the counter is only staffed when somebody remembers to check it. Product questions arrive constantly, mostly in the evening, mostly about colour, size, price and stock, and the value of an answer decays quickly. A message answered in two minutes often becomes a sale. The same message answered the next afternoon usually becomes nothing.

That makes Instagram an unusually good fit for automation, but only if the automation can answer the actual question. Generic auto replies make things worse, because they signal that nobody is coming. What works is an agent that knows the catalogue: which colours exist, what the price is today, whether size 39 can ship this week. Paperchat does that by searching your connected store during the conversation rather than working from a description it learned weeks ago, and store connections are available on every plan including the free one.

The second thing worth designing for is the conversation that cannot end in a sale right now. Out of stock sizes, items arriving next month, shoppers waiting for payday. Those are not failures, they are leads, and the moment to capture them is while the person is still interested. On paid plans the agent asks for an email at that point and stores it with the full transcript, so a restock message can be specific rather than a generic blast.

Handover matters here too, because Instagram conversations sometimes turn into complaints, sizing disputes or bespoke requests that deserve a person. Paperchat can move the conversation to your team while the customer stays in Instagram, with your team replying from a single inbox that also holds your website, Messenger and Telegram conversations. Nobody has to reconstruct what was already said, and the customer is not asked to repeat themselves.

Finally, treat the inbox as data. Fifty Instagram transcripts tell you which size chart is confusing, which product photo is misleading and which question your captions should be answering. Because every conversation is stored and searchable, the channel stops being a black hole of unanswered messages and becomes a fairly reliable read on what your audience is unsure about.
